Today’s headlines daily deliver the darkness, tragedy, inequity, and outrage of our times, which can leave one feeling overwhelmed and powerless. In this full-day workshop, participants will consider poems of praise (odes) and poems of outrage (activist poetry) as examples of the forms of light poetry can generate amid darkness. Using several contemporary poems as source texts, participants will draft their own odes and their own activist poems. Along the way, we will discuss the power of the poetic line, the generosity of a long-lingered-with image, and the relationship in poetry between exclamation and inquiry. The afternoon will include a concentrated revision workshop in which participants will play with fresh revision strategies, and our day will conclude with a participant poetry reading.
